Collection summary derived from "Guidebook to Manuscripts", 1969: Alexander Posey (1873-1908) was an educator, journalist and poet, politician, and editor of the Indian Journal, published at Eufala, Indian Territory. His mother was a Creek. He was employed as a clerk by the Dawes Commission and was secretary of the Sequoyah Constitutional Convention at Muskogee in 1905. The papers consist of poems in his own hand, manuscripts, legal documents, a scrap book, a journal kept while he was Superintendent of the Creek Orphan Home at Okmulgee, personal letters, and transcripts of biographical material.

Provenance

The Gilcrease Foundation acquired these materials before 1964 and is housed in the Helmerich Center for American Research (HCAR). The library currently receives most materials through community donation, board members, artists and the acquisition of manuscript collections.

Processing Information

Staff, interns, and volunteers of the Thomas Gilcrease Library and Archive have contributed to the organization and maintenance of the files since the collection passed to the City of Tulsa in the 1950s.
