Description

Object is an enameled, metal hinged box with a hinged metal panel which flips out to provide the user with a mixing surface. It is designed for the traveling artist, with two metal rings on the bottom side to facilitate holding. Inside the box, there are 21 removable plastic half pan holders which contain various colored half pans. There is one removable plastic full pan holder. There are two wrapped half pans inside the box; Cobalt Blue and Ivory Black. The interior of the box is divided into two long sections by a thin metal wall with triangular cutouts along the wall's top edge. There are 5 additional thin metal walls perpendicular to the long wall.

Inscriptions typed in black on the Colbolt Blue pan's label: 'Series 3.' on the proper right side, 'WINSOR & NEWTON LTD.', 'LONDON, England.', 'WATER COLOUR', 'COBALT BLUE.', 'BLEU DE COBALT', BLEU DI COBALTO.', 'AZUL COBALTO.' on the top side a griffin logo and 'TRADE MARK' on the bottom side. '53' is written in pencil on the proper right side. '53' is written in black ink on the proper left side. 'S L' is stamped in red on the top side. Inscriptions typed in black on the Ivory Black pan's label: ‘Series 1." on proper right side, 'WINSOR & NEWTON LTD.', 'LONDON, ENGLAND.', 'NEGRO MARFIL.' on the top side, a griffin logo and 'TRADE MARK' on the bottom side. 'S L' is stamped in red on the top side.

Notes

The Homer and Helen Britzman collection consists of over 10,000 objects belonging to Charles M. Russell including letters, drawings, personal belongings, photos, and other memorabilia. Homer Britzman worked extensively with Charles Russell’s wife, Nancy, to write Russell’s biography. Chain of custody: Nancy Russell, Homer and Helen Britzman, Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, Amon Carter (inventoried collection in 1997), Gilcrease Management Trust (will become property of TU Special Collections if management agreement between TU and the City of Tulsa is severed).
