From Philip Cole, three pages, April 14, 1927, enclosed checks for five paintings, $7000, another check--$1000--for two bronzes, "Jim Bridger" and "Secrets of the Night", also mentions "The Bad One" and "Father de Schmidt".
April 14, 1927 PG C: EG Mrs. Charles M. Russell, 701 Michigan Boulevard, Pasadena, California. Dear Nancy: I enclosed two check[sic] on the Lawyers Trust Company both of which are payable to you. One is Check No. 4 for $7,000. and the other is check No. 35 for $1,000. The $7,000. check takes care of the five last pictures which were purchased from you, and the $1,000. check takes care of the two bronzes, namely, "Jim Bridger" and“Secrets of the Night", each at $500. which is in accord with the details of my purchases as outlined in my letter of March 9 to you. Last week I had my original copy of the little "Scalp Dancer" properly boxed up and shipped to you. Please let me know if you received this in good condition. The new one is a much better one than the one I am return- ing. At the same time let me tell you how pleased I am with "Jim Bridger”. In many ways I consider this one of the best bronzes that Charley has ever done; that, and the little "Secrets of the Night". We are in the midst of getting settled in our home again and at the same time I am quite busy attempt- ing to get various pictures framed, etc. Also we are go- ing ahead with the plans for the building of the Russell Room. It is going to be a "Knock-out" as a room itself, and when it is filled with all of the things by Charley which I have, it will be something worth coming to see. I am sure that you, like Katharine and myself, will be very proud of it. The other day I stopped in at Juley’s to see about getting some photographs taken of the Sharp por- traits, and possibly rephotographing some of the pictures by Charley which are not well reproduced in my book. [next] -2- I had a very enjoyable visit with Mr. Juley and he showed me all of his negatives of Charley's things, many of which I have never seen before. I told him that I was going to write you asking for your permission to him to sell me a copy of each film which he has of Charley's pictures. I just want these to put aside somewhere for my own personal pleasure. I told him there was no doubt in my mind about your authorizing him to do this, and I hope that in reply to this letter you will so state. I happen to notice that in one corner of "The Bad One" it is marked as copyrighted by Charles M. Russell. Does this copyright pass on to me and do I have the copyrights on all the pictures by Charley which I now own? If not, what is necessary for me ·to obtain these copyrights? I rather think I would like to have copyrights on every painting by Charley which I have. Two other matters which I wish to remind you of are - first, your writing to Country Life or some other magazine as we discussed, suggesting that they publish full page color reporductions[sic] of the paintings which I own, as they did with Mr. Mackay's pictures. You will recall that we talked this over. I think the suggestion would come much better from you than from me. Second, is in regard to the historical series which Charley did. Do you care to sell me the originals, if so, at what price? If you positively do not want to do this then will you kindly proceed to get for me the reproductions made on the better class of paper as you suggested. Have you any idea yet how soon you will be able to send "Father de Schmidt" on to· me? As you know, I will be leaving here the latter part of June and am anxious to have it as soon as may be. Will you be kind enough to check the various items over which I have mentioned in this letter, and be sure to answer each question which I have asked. Katharine and I were both sorry not to have been able to get up again to see your charming and appropriate bungalow after the litter was cleared up. We are thankful, however, that we did get to see it at all and surely agree with you that it is one peach of a place. We had a very pleasant trip home, though Philip broke his arm just before we left, and Jane [next] [3] came down with measles just after we arrived here. Apparently we slid through on a most auspicious occasion when everybody seemed to be well. Katharine joins me in every good wish to yourself and also to Jack. Sincerely your friend, [signed] Philip G Cole Encl. (check) [handwritten] P.S. Please write me a little separate note that I can present to [Juley] authorizing him to give me a print at my expense of each photo which he has negatives of.
