From Philip Cole to Nancy C. Russell, May 18, 1927
Description
From Philip Cole, two pages, May 18, 1927, mailing twenty photo copies of paintings he owns under separate cover, "Country Life" shows proofs for "Trails Plowed Under", mentions Father de Smed painting.
May 18, 1927 PG C: EG Mrs. Charles M. Russell, 701 Michigan Boulevard, Pasadena, California. Dear Nancy: Under separate cover I am mailing three copies each of the twenty paintings by Charley which I own. I am also including one copy each of two letters and one of a little sketch by Seltzer. I have not included the bronzes for I assume that you have photographs of these. If not, and you will let me know, I will be glad to also give you copies of these. I think it is a great thing for the Library in Great Falls to have a photograph of each of Charley's works. I assume that you are giving credit to the owners of the various pictures. I had a visit from one of the men from "Country Life" the other night. He showed me the advance proofs for ''Trails Plowed Under". It surely is good and I feel no doubt that it will go over in great style. I suggested to him an idea which I am confident would go over even bigger than "Trails Plowed Under"; that is a De Luxe edition containing beautifully colored reproductions of say forty or fifty of Charley's best paintings, with possibly il- lustrations of bronzes added. I have a hunch that people would gladly pay five or even ten times the price of ''Trails Plowed Under'' for such a collection gathered together in book form. I am addressing this letter and the photographs to you in Pasadena, though I imagine you are about ready to embark for Montana, if you have not already done so. Katharine joins me as always in every good wish to yourself and yours. Sincerely yours, [signed] Phil Dr. Philip G. Cole, 470 Vanderbilt Ave. Brooklyn, N. Y. P.S. It is possible that I may have a chance to sell some of the things which I have the privilege from you [next] 2nd Page - Mrs. Charles M. Russell May 18, 1927 of trading in on "Father de Smed" if I buy it. If so and I can get the full amount on any of them in cash I assume that you would like me to do so. Unless I hear from you to the con- trary will start making an effort in this direction, because in any event I want to get rid of some of these poorer things. Should this, however, not be agreeable to you please wire me within a week, as I intend starting next week on my job of getting something in to help take care of all I have recently put out. [signed] P.G. C.
