Transcript

February 19, 1935 Mrs. Charles M. Russell 725 Michigan Blvd., Pasadena, California. Dear Nancy, I have written you twice asking for information on my most recent acquisition of Charlie’s which I am temporarily titling “The Mourner”. So far I am without an answer from you, for which I can only account by assuming that you have not received my letters. I am writing you this third letter both with the hope of hearing from you in answer to my query regarding the proper title and to inform you of a wax model of Charlie’s which I have recently seen at the Douthitt Gallery, 597 Fifth Avenue. It is a wax group depicting a pony express relay station and is I think one of the best of Charlie’s wax works I have ever seen – which is saying a lot. I am sure you will be interested in knowing where it is. I think they are considering the possibility of its being cast, though frankly I think it too complicated for that. The scene shows a log cabin express office on the left hand side, a black goateed man looking at his watch (on foot), while two horsemen are effecting an exchange of saddles on two horses, one wearied and the other rarin’ to go. I just thought I would tip you off to it if it is of any interest to you. As always, [signed] Philip Dr. Philip G. Cole MVB
