April 19, 1 9 2 8 Mr. Edwin E. Smith, Bermuda Ranch, Bonham, Texas. Dear Mr. Smith: Your letter of April 10, mailed to Great Falls, has reached me here at home in Pasadena. I am enclosing, under separate cover, two photo- graphs to be used in the article for “The Mentor”, giving credit on the back to their owners. It certain- ly was nice of you to write as you did about Charlie’s work and, of course, I don’t think anyone everypictured[sic] the cowpuncher and cowman of the old West as Charlie did. His horses and animals are beyond criticism. Will Rogers said that Charlie was one man that painted the cowpuncher in such a way that the cowpuncher him- self couldn’t criticize. I remember didstinctly the sketches Charlie made for Mr. Pattullo’s stories. Am glad you told me that that[sic] sketch of Corazon is to be used so I will send something different. Am much interested in having a representative memorial collection of Charlie’s things in Texas some day and, of course, at the Cattle Men’s Convention would be the ideal time for them to see what little I have left of Charlie’s wonderful work. I would necessarily have to borrow some pictures but would do that if there would be a wonderful collection bronze by thim[sic] that would interest every cow man that saw it. If you can give me a plan by which I can work, the possible quarters in which the pictures are to be hung, and the lighting equipment, giving me the dates of your next meeting, which I imagine is some time in March, we will start making plans for that Show.
