March 30, 1928. Mr. George H. Charls, 1006 First National Bank Bldg., Canton, Ohio. Dear Mr. Charls: Your letter of March 20 received. I am very sorry I do not own the original painting by Charles M. Russell entitled, “Whose Meat.” It was cold in New York some years ago. If you wish me to, I will attempt to get trace of the original and see if it can be bought, as I believe the man who bought it has since passed away and whether its in his estate or has been transferred, I do not know. You, of course, realize Mr. Russell never made any two pictures alike so any other bear pictures would not be similar. I have one splendid example of a bear picture but nothing like “Whose Meat,” as this one shows two cowboys roping a bear on the East side of the Rocky Mountains, broken country, very brilliant coloring, at sunset. The canvas is 30” x 48”. The price of this picture is $18,000. It will be a pleasure to try and trace “Whose Meat” for you, if you are interested in my trying to find the original and thank you for the interest you have shown in Russell pictures. Sincerely, NCR; ed
