May 14, 1913 Dr. Philip G. Cole, 551 Fifth Ave., New York City. Dear Philip: In yesterday’s mail, I received two photographs of paint- ings by Charlie. The canvasses are 24” x 36” and should be in fine condition. They were great pictures when paint- ed. I am sending you the photographs, which are very poor. The originals belong to a man in Calgary. I do not know what he asks for them but have written him for his best price. The picture entitled, “Children of the Sun,” is the only picture of this subject Charlie ever did. As I remember, it’s a beautiful piece of work that tells a lot of the devotion of our Red Mens’ hearts. I am enclosing a little description of it that may help you see it through Charlie’s eyes. The other picture is called, “Carson’s Men.” It’s next to impossible to tell from these photographs what the pictures are, if you did not already know Charlie’s work so well. “Good Medicine”, is making a great name for itself and Charlie. Maybe you’ll remember telling me that I just must keep Charlie’s name before the people; that my work was not finished. I’m so grateful to you for that advice, as I have lived long enough now to see that name honored by the United States as one of her greatest sons. All good wishes to you and yours.
