Latrobe’s fifth diary covers the journey west from March 16-July 11, 1833. Latrobe delves into the habits of travelers remarking on one of the Germans traveling with the company and commenting on the man’s swearing tendencies. There is also a description of a garden with reference to a bountiful and beautiful banana crop; it is unclear, but this garden might be described by one of the travelers rather than a garden the travelers saw along their journey. The architectural style of houses seen is elaborated on as well. Some of the stone houses are described with balconies, and many of the houses are said to be in ruins. Latrobe's handwriting is very difficult to read, and the ink is faded on certain pages. Overall, Memoranda Five is in fragile condition.
