Elias Boudinot (1802-1839) was a Cherokee leader and writer. In 1828, he became editor of The Cherokee Phoenix, the first Native American newspaper. Believing removal was inevitable, Boudinot, like Major Ridge, was a signer of the Treaty of New Echota, thereby becoming an enemy of John Ross and the majority of the tribe. He died violently after relocation to the West.
