Inscription(s)

Inscribed, "The Pay Room in the old barracks at Fort Gibson. This picture was taken some day, after the payment began, but there are hundreds of thousands left in the bundles on the table, with his coat off is Treasurer E.E. Starr of the Cherokee Nation, who is paymaster, and the large man sitting by him is Principal Chief C.J. Harris of the Cherokees. Those around are all clerks or guards. The Indians are a draughty set, and it is more than probable that the "grip" on the shelf contains a bottle or two of whisky. The amount paid to each Cherokee man woman or child is $267.70. Each one received two $100 bills, three $20 bills, one five dollar bill and $2.70 in silver." on verso
