Context
The letter was written six (6) months before Empress Carlota traveled to Europe to petition continued support for Mexico. Empress Carlota’s father, Leopold I of Belgium, died in December 1865. As the empress did not learn of her father’s death until January 1866, it can be deduced that this is the “profound loss” the letter mentions.
