Collection Overview

Collection summary derived from "Guidebook to Manuscripts", 1969: These letters pertain to the cession of Indian lands to the State of Georgia and from Georgia to the U.S. Government in 1802. At least one of them is addressed to Gov. Josiah Tattnall, Jr. James Jackson (1757-1806) was governor of Georgia from 1798 to 1801. Following his term, he became a commissioner for the State of Georgia under Governor Tattnall and served in this capacity with Abraham Baldwin and John Milledge. Interesting item: A document signed by James Madison, then Secretary of State, certifies "that the annexed writing is a True Copy of the Original remaining in the Office of the Department of State," the certified copy being the articles of agreement and cession of lands mentioned above.

The Gilcrease Foundation acquired these materials before 1964 and is housed in the Helmerich Center for American Research (HCAR). The library currently receives most materials through community donation, board members, artists and the acquisition of manuscript collections.

Processing Information

Staff, interns, and volunteers of the Thomas Gilcrease Library and Archive have contributed to the organization and maintenance of the files since the collection passed to the City of Tulsa in the 1950s.
