Knox-Willett Letters

 Collection — Box: 1
Identifier: MC.1954.117

Collection Overview

Henry Knox letter dated July 3, 1790 is in response to two letters received from Colonel Marinus Willett—one letter from Willett dated May 22 [1790] location undecipherable and the other letter from Willett dated June 15 [1790] from Hopewell. (The two letters predating Knox’s letter of July 3, 1790 are not included in this collection.)

There is also a typed description included in the reference material for these letters. Background information about Alexander McGillivray’s spy activity during the Revolutionary War is discussed in detail along with the payment conversations between the British, Spanish, and United States. The discussion of who would pay Alexander McGillivray the greatest sum would determine who would gain the loyalty of McGillivray and the other Creek leaders. The United States offered $1200 but the Spanish tripled the offered amount, and the Treaty of New York was repudiated.
