Collection Overview

Collection summary derived from "Guidebook to Manuscripts", 1969: A. T. Lea (n. d.), Special Agent for the Sioux tribes, was appointed to take a census of the Indians, July 24, 1889. Among these papers is Lea's report of his census; and there are two accounts, one official report and one a personal letter, of finding a small Indian girl on the battle field after the Wounded Knee Battle. The letter is to General L. W. Colby and his reply is also included. There is a typed report of the killing of Sitting Bull and a map, unlabeled, but apparently of the Wounded Knee Battle. On the reverse side of the map is an unfinished account of the battle. It bears no signature and no date.
