Collection summary derived from "Guidebook to Manuscripts", 1969: An early day school teacher in Tulsa, Lilah Denton Lindsay (1860-1943) writes "Memories of Yesterday in my School Life in the Indian Territory Mission Field." Miss Lindsay's mother was a pupil of Reverend R. M. Loughridge at the Creek Mission School at Coweta. Lilah taught under him at the Wealaka Mission School in 1883, and taught day school in Okmulgee, 1884-85. Employed by the Home Mission Board of the Presbyterian Church, she taught in the Tulsa school under Miss Stonecipher, the principal of this Indian School. It was in 1887 that the first white children were admitted to the school by special permission of the Board and payment of $1.00 per year.

Provenance

The Gilcrease Foundation acquired these materials before 1964 and is housed in the Helmerich Center for American Research (HCAR). The library currently receives most materials through community donation, board members, artists and the acquisition of manuscript collections.

Processing Information

Staff, interns, and volunteers of the Thomas Gilcrease Library and Archive have contributed to the organization and maintenance of the files since the collection passed to the City of Tulsa in the 1950s.
