Collection Overview

Collection summary derived from "Guidebook to Manuscripts", 1969: William Addison Phillips (1824-1893), born at Paisley, Scotland, was a soldier, congressman from Kansas, author, and, with four associates, founder of the town of Salina, Kansas. He was a colonel in the Union Army and commander of the Union Indian Brigade from January, 1863, until the end of the War. Among the papers is a typed document which has his signature as special agent and counsel for the Cherokees. Senate Bill No. 25 is "an Act to Continue the Services as Attorney for the Cherokee Nation" approved and dated November 25, 1884. Many papers relate to his services performed in that office. There are also drafts of bills, resolutions, and various letters. Interesting item: Abraham Lincoln's Proclamation of Pardon and Amnesty in the Cherokee Language. It was translated and printed at Fort Gibson, C. N., by Order of Colonel William A. Phillips, commander First Brigade, Army of the Frontier (1863). It is the only known copy, and is thought to be the only state paper of Lincoln's to be translated into the Cherokee Language. This valuable document has been translated back into the English by Mrs. Anna Gritts Kilpatrick.
