Collection summary derived from "Guidebook to Manuscripts", 1969: Dr. James Greene Walker (n.d.), a circuit minister of the Methodist Church stationed at Tahlequah in the Cherokee Nation, is the writer of five diaries. The first one, written 1861-1863, is a transcript "by A. G. Sexton of New York, from Graham Shorthand, old style." The other diaries, 1875, '76, '78, and '80-81, are in small notebooks written with an indelible pencil. Walker was transferred to Texas in 1867 and the diaries after that were written from Prairie Lea, Texas. They are records of the weather, sermons preached, and the daily life of a minister on circuit.

Provenance

The Gilcrease Foundation acquired these materials before 1964 and is housed in the Helmerich Center for American Research (HCAR). The library currently receives most materials through community donation, board members, artists and the acquisition of manuscript collections.

Processing Information

Staff, interns, and volunteers of the Thomas Gilcrease Library and Archive have contributed to the organization and maintenance of the files since the collection passed to the City of Tulsa in the 1950s.
