Collection Overview

Collection summary derived from "Guidebook to Manuscripts", 1969: Ethan Allen Hitchcock, U.S. Army officer (1798-1870) was delegated to investigate charges of frauds against the Indians in Indian Territory in 1840 and 1841. His papers contain autobiographical sketches, correspondence, personal information, and information relating to Indian affairs. Also included are military orders and an account book (1847- 1858) which is dated "1832" on the leather binding, but it is evidently one Hitchcock picked up in Mexico. It lists the amounts of payments to U. S. soldiers in the Mexican War and gives some account of the Mexican campaign. Some of the papers also concern Millie Francis , Creek Indian girl who received a Congressional Medal for saving the life of a U. S. soldier in the Seminole War. The diaries date from 1858 to 1868, but the first one contains a resume of earlier diaries written from 1819 to 1834. They consist of autobiographical notes, a map of Mexico (1830) and a great deal about the Mexican War.
