Collection summary derived from "Guidebook to Manuscripts", 1969: William Burnet (1688-1729) was appointed Governor of New York and New Jersey in 1720. In 1728 he transferred to Massachusetts where he also served as Governor. New York was the key colony in regard to the entire colonial policy concerning the Indians at this time. Burnet endeavored to prevent French trade with the Indians and to provide a wise and farseeing Indian policy for the British. There are eleven letters to and from Governor Burnet (one in French) concerning Indian matters and trade with the Indians. A copy of records kept at a conference between Governor Burnet and Indians from the six tribes, September 7, 1726, concerning surrender of Indian lands is included among these papers.

Provenance

The Gilcrease Foundation acquired these materials before 1964 and is housed in the Helmerich Center for American Research (HCAR). The library currently receives most materials through community donation, board members, artists and the acquisition of manuscript collections.

Processing Information

Staff, interns, and volunteers of the Thomas Gilcrease Library and Archive have contributed to the organization and maintenance of the files since the collection passed to the City of Tulsa in the 1950s.
