Collection summary derived from "Guidebook to Manuscripts", 1969: This original autograph manuscript written by George Cartwright (1739-1819) is entitled "The Case of the Wild or Red Indians of Newfoundland with a Plan for their relief." The writer gives a description of the Indians of Newfoundland and then relates the barbarous cruelties and murders committed on them by the English traders and others. It concludes with suggestions by him for their relief against such atrocities. Cartwright was formerly an officer in the British Army and made six expeditions to Newfoundland and Labrador between 1770 and 1786.

Provenance

The Gilcrease Foundation acquired these materials before 1964 and is housed in the Helmerich Center for American Research (HCAR). The library currently receives most materials through community donation, board members, artists and the acquisition of manuscript collections.

Processing Information

Staff, interns, and volunteers of the Thomas Gilcrease Library and Archive have contributed to the organization and maintenance of the files since the collection passed to the City of Tulsa in the 1950s.
