Collection summary derived from "Guidebook to Manuscripts", 1969: Lieutenant Heber M. Creel, of the 7th Cavalry, was assigned to study the ethnology of the Cheyennes. These manuscripts contain a large amount of material concerning the language of the Cheyenne as well as ethnology and philology. In the Gilcrease Library there is a Cheyenne-English dictionary compiled by Rev. Rodolphe Petter, missionary to the Cheyennes in 1891 at Cantonment, Oklahoma, and printed at Kettle Falls, Washington, 1913-1915. While there are similarities between the two works, there is no proof that the Petter dictionary was based on the Creel manuscript.

Provenance

The Gilcrease Foundation acquired these materials before 1964 and is housed in the Helmerich Center for American Research (HCAR). The library currently receives most materials through community donation, board members, artists and the acquisition of manuscript collections.

Processing Information

Staff, interns, and volunteers of the Thomas Gilcrease Library and Archive have contributed to the organization and maintenance of the files since the collection passed to the City of Tulsa in the 1950s.
