Collection Overview

The Frederick Haldimand Papers consist of letters, receipts, accounts, and other official documents related to Indian affairs in North America during and just after the Revolutionary War. Included are letters to and from Sir John Johnson, General in the British Army. In addition, there are accounts of sundries issued to Indian scouts (Montreal, May, 1778) and to others.

Note: In record folder, there are taped clippings that were pasted on the original Haldiman folders. The registration numbers have been written on these clippings, so it will be easy to match which clipping went with each folder/item. It is unclear where these clippings originated from before being taped onto the respective archive folders.

Biographical / Historical

Sir Frederick Haldimand (1718 - 1791), born in Neuchatel, Switzerland, entered the British Army in 1756. He became the British governor and Canadian commander in chief from 1778-1784. During his career, he assisted many American colonists who remained loyal to Britain to settle in Canada.

Provenance

The Gilcrease Foundation acquired these materials before 1964 and is housed in the Helmerich Center for American Research (HCAR). The library currently receives most materials through community donation, board members, artists and the acquisition of manuscript collections.

Processing Information

Staff, interns, and volunteers of the Thomas Gilcrease Library and Archive have contributed to the organization and maintenance of the files since the collection passed to the City of Tulsa in the 1950s.
