This letter describing the growth of Fort Gibson was written in Cherokee by an unknown author. A translated excerpt reads: "Your dad came home, he is well . Here in town it's growing, they are building little houses, in a couple years it will be a big town." The US military built Fort Gibson in 1824 to facilitate expansion westward and to forcibly remove tribes to Indian Territory.
