Curatorial Remarks

This appears to be a photograph of the 1859 version of Moran's painting, Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came. Moran created a smaller version in 1885 [See 4316.5606] . The painting was inspired by Robert Browning's poem of the same name, which was in turn inspired by Shakespeare's King Lear.

This appears to be a photograph of Thomas Moran's 1875-1876 oil painting "Fiercely the Red Sun Descending/Burned his way along the Heavens," currently owned by the North Carolina Museum of Art, accession number 52.9.34. The painting was inspired by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's epic poem The Song of Hiawatha.
