This Certificate of Homestead Allotment was awarded to Anna Meigs, a Cherokee freedwoman and a descendant of people who were enslaved by citizens of the Cherokee Nation. Many Black freedmen and freedwomen turned their allotments into farming communities that grew into prosperous towns and cities.
