Collection Overview Collection summary derived from "Guidebook to Manuscripts", 1969: William de la Montagne Cary (1841-1922), artist and traveler, was born in Tappan, New York, and was apprenticed to an engineer. When twenty years old, he made his first trip to the West and in 1861 he explored the Missouri River Country. In 1874 he accompanied the Northern Boundary Survey party on their return to Bismark.
