Scope and Contents

This map contains depictions of Louisiana territory and the surrounding areas, such as Florida, Carolina and as north as the Great Lakes. This map also depicts areas near Louisiana as inhabited by Indigenous peoples, such as the Apache and the Padoucas tribes. Inscribed in type, "The Landing Place of Fyrnand Soto in 1539" in middle on recto; Inscribed in type, "Explanation: [house] Habitations of the Indians [asterisk] Promiscuous Nations [plus sign] Nations destroyed [snake emblem] Course of Soto and Mocoso towards the Mouth of the River Mississippi where they were pursued by the Indians" along bottom edge on recto; Inscribed in type, "These Nations make war with the Spaniards" along bottom edge on recto; Inscribed in type, "A French Fort established by M. de la Salle in 1685" above bottom edge on recto; Inscribed in pencil, "[Illegible signature] La p563 1721" in top right corner on verso; Inscribed in pencil, "Map.24" in bottom right corner on verso; Inscribed in typed text, "1721 SE 3" on white rectangular sticker in bottom right corner on verso.
