Collection Overview

Collection summary derived from "Guidebook to Manuscripts", 1969: Colonel John Trumbull (1756-1843), a soldier and aide to Gen. George Washington, was a portrait painter during the Revolutionary and Federalist periods. This slender volume, similar to a scrapbook, contains two letters written and signed by John Trumbull: one to Richard Rush regarding the death of Benjamin West, and the other to Sir Thomas Lawrence congratulating him as president of the Royal Academy, succeeding West. Another item in the book is a chart indicating the colors used in Trumbull's painting "Our Saviour Receiving Little Children." This is followed by seven proofs, in various states, of an engraving of the painting, "Surrender of Cornwallis." There are two invitations included in the album, one to a dinner given by "The President," dated 1827; and one to a dinner "to be given by Citizens of New-York, to the Honorable Daniel Webster, as a testimony of the high opinion ... "

The Gilcrease Foundation acquired these materials before 1964 and is housed in the Helmerich Center for American Research (HCAR). The library currently receives most materials through community donation, board members, artists and the acquisition of manuscript collections.

Processing Information

Staff, interns, and volunteers of the Thomas Gilcrease Library and Archive have contributed to the organization and maintenance of the files since the collection passed to the City of Tulsa in the 1950s.
