Collection summary derived from "Guidebook to Manuscripts", 1969: Clark Field was a private citizen from Tulsa who gave generously of his time and money to support the excavation work at the Spiro Mound site. His collection of photographs with handwritten notes document the dig in progress. The Spiro Mound Site, in LeFlore County, was excavated by the Anthropology Department of the University of Oklahoma. The supervisor of the dig was Dr. Forrest E. Clements. It was part of a Works Projects Administration (WPA) undertaking between 1934 and 1937. The University of Tulsa and the Oklahoma State Historical Society were co-sponsors of the project. This is his album of photographs of a dig in progress at the Spiro Mound site.

Provenance

The Gilcrease Foundation acquired these materials before 1964 and is housed in the Helmerich Center for American Research (HCAR). The library currently receives most materials through community donation, board members, artists and the acquisition of manuscript collections.

Processing Information

Staff, interns, and volunteers of the Thomas Gilcrease Library and Archive have contributed to the organization and maintenance of the files since the collection passed to the City of Tulsa in the 1950s.
