This 16th-century map by Abraham Ortelius was published in his Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Theater of the World), the first modern atlas, and became highly recognizable and influential for mapmakers. Ortelius drew from the latest Spanish, Portuguese, and French geographical sources to mark locations in the Western Hemisphere. Ortelius's lack of knowledge about the North American Great Plains region, where Oklahoma and Texas are now located, is evident in his atlas. Several mountain ranges run east to west in the Oklahoma area. The Texas region is labeled "Terlichichimechi," likely describing the territory where European cartographers believed the Chichimeca peoples lived.
