Guidebook to Manuscripts

Collection summary derived from "Guidebook to Manuscripts", 1969: This collection contains various papers pertaining to business affairs among the Chickasaws. There is correspondence with such people as Charles E. Mix and N. G. Taylor, Commissioners of Indian Affairs, and General Samuel G. Smoot, Special Agent of the Department of the Interior. One letter is addressed to "Hon. Cox," Secretary of the Interior. Included is a photostatic copy of the constitution and laws of the Chickasaw Nation, transmitted in December, 1848. Interesting item: An act of the Legislative Council of the Nation granted the right to Parker, Carter, and Maytubby to maintain telephone lines within the Chickasaw Nation, but it was disapproved by William McKinley, President of the United States, whose signature appears on the document. The Chickasaw Papers consist of a collection of materials such as personal letters, government correspondence, legers, and probate court records ranging from 1792-1904. Letters include correspondence from Samuel G. Smoot, N.G. Taylor, A. Harlan, E. S. Parker, and others. The collection material primarily deals with monetary issues and proof of payments. Some notable documents are a printed document signed by President William McKinley disapproving of the action of the Chickasaw Legislature (1900), Chickasaw Incompetent Fund Ledger (1889-1890), and Probate Court records, Pontotoc County (1902-1904).

Provenance

The Gilcrease Foundation acquired these materials before 1964 and is housed in the Helmerich Center for American Research (HCAR). The library currently receives most materials through community donation, board members, artists and the acquisition of manuscript collections.

Processing Information

Staff, interns, and volunteers of the Thomas Gilcrease Library and Archive have contributed to the organization and maintenance of the files since the collection passed to the City of Tulsa in the 1950s.
