Bowles (1763-1805), this is a proclamation dated October 31, 1799, expelling all Spaniards and Americans from the independent "State of Muskogee" issued from Wakina, Florida. Bowles was the leader of three "filibustering expeditions" against the Spaniards in Florida. He was an adventurer who lived among the Creeks and sought to establish the independent State of Muskogee.

Collection summary derived from "Guidebook to Manuscripts", 1969: A guest of P.H. Sheridan, William E. Strong kept an interesting account of a hunting trip to Indian Territory in 1878. General A.W. Whipple, a Colonel Moore, and Ben Clark, guide, were also in the hunting party. Strong gives a good description of Clark and there is a photograph of him.
